Royal Caribbean Crew Saves Smuggled Cat from Euthanasia

A recent incident aboard the Royal Caribbean International’s ship, Ovation of the Seas, revealed an unexpected stowaway – a pet cat named Ovie. The feline, discovered during a routine inspection, had been smuggled aboard by an unidentified guest.

The CEO, Michael Bayley, disclosed that the cat was likely hidden within the guest’s sweatshirt during boarding. Ovie’s discovery, occurring on a nearly three-week voyage from Hawaii to Sydney, prompted concerns about biosecurity regulations, as pets are prohibited unless they serve as emotional support animals or service dogs.

Biosecurity agents from New Zealand intervened, preventing the cat from disembarking and initiating an investigation into its entry and health status. Despite the potential for euthanasia due to the breach of cruise policies, the crew tirelessly worked to save Ovie.

After quarantine and ensuring the feline’s health, Royal Caribbean International arranged for Ovie’s safe return to the US. Remarkably, the cat found a new home in Miami, adopted by a crew member.

This unforeseen journey highlighted the crew’s dedication, as they navigated bureaucratic challenges and brought Ovie safely to its new family, despite the breach of cruise regulations.

The incident, however, leaves lingering questions about how the cat managed to evade security measures. Royal Caribbean Cruises is yet to confirm the specific details surrounding the feline’s unexpected presence onboard the Ovation of the Seas.
